I'm Rena, a painter, writer, and the founder of Project Bly, a travel website built on the philosophy that to know a city one must wander its streets.
I'm a self-taught artist, and began painting in 2010. My paintings are inspired by the colors of my childhood as well as my travels around the world. I paint with acrylics, inks, pastels and charcoal. I paint what I see and experience, and my art is both abstract and figurative.
I grew up in the city formerly known as Madras on the South East coast of India to an American mother and an Indian father. I've traveled to over 60 countries, often solo, and some of my most memorable adventures include trekking through Chachapoyas in the Northern Peruvian Andes, surfing the warm waters of Brazil and Java and exploring lush Fergana Valley in Uzbekistan.
Prior to founding Project Bly and embracing a more creative life, I was a corporate lawyer in Silicon Valley. I have a JD from Northwestern University School of Law and my 7 year legal career included working at a big law firm as well as working in-house as general counsel for a venture backed clean energy company. These corporate years taught me a lot about starting my own business. You can read more about this here.
Prior to law school, I was an engineer on offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico where I learnt among other things, how to get out of a helicopter if it crashes in the water. I have fortunately never had to test this important skill.
I write on Medium about things that interest me including race, family, travel, depression, and entrepreneurship. I also blog on this website about art, dogs, surfing and such. I live in San Francisco with my husband, George and our rescue-dog, Bird.
